Presidents Message

The highlight of October was the ham radio swap meet in Waimea. We had 75 guest sign the register with some hams coming from Oahu, Kauai and Australia. Kevin Bogan AH6QO, our ARRL Pacific Section Manager from Oahu spoke for a few minutes at the 10AM opening. It was great getting to visit with our ham friends and to meet many new ones. It’s always nice to be able to put a face with the voice that we have heard on the radio. Greg Roberts VK2TPL of Sydney, Australia was on island for the Ironman Triathlon and heard about our swap meet. Had a nice visit with Norm Cohler NH7UA of Waimea. He informed me that the hams on the North end of the island are hoping to start a new radio club up there. Anyone interested should give him a call at 882-1092. Congratulations to Irene Kubica for passing her code test during the afternoon testing session. Our thanks to Gloria Whiteley for providing most of the refreshments even though she was unable to attend this year. Esther Schneider was a great help at the reception desk. Our thanks to Bob Schneider AH6J and John Buck KH7T for an excellent job of co-chairing the swap meet. I think everyone had a great time and are already looking forward to one again next year.

Two of our members Ron (AJ0T) and Nadine (KA0FBB) Ebert of Kau are members of Na Kupuna O Ka’u. The 22nd Annual Kupuna Festival held September 22-23 at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel showcased 18 halaus from the Big Island, Oahu, Molakai, Maui, Japan and California. Kane Division winner was Na Kupuna O Ka’u with 299 points. Mixed Division 2nd place also went to Ka’u. The overall award for 2004 went to Ka’u with 1160 points. The halau was presented with a pahu drum. Congratulations to Ron and Nadine. We are looking forward to having them participate in our 2005 Hawaiian program.

Richard AH7G, my husband, is scheduled for his second back surgery in Honolulu on November 16th. Please keep him in your prayers.

At our regular November meeting on the 13th we will be holding our annual elections for the year 2005. Hope to see many of you there. Also the next day we are having a pot luck dinner at Ralph (AH6RF) and Maureen ((KH6MF) Fontaine’s home at 1PM. Directions are provided in another section of the newsletter. Fontaines will provide beverages and a dessert. You will certainly drool when you get the grand tour of Ralph’s ham shack, see their fabulous new home and see the view from their front lanai.

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. We have much to be thankful for this year.
